Ferreira,Rodrigo L.; Marques,Maria M.G.S.M..

Bras. Zool.
Repenning,Márcio; Basso,Helena C. de P.; Rossoni,Jonas R.; Krügel,Marilise M.; Fontana,Carla S..
We studied stomachs contents of 50 specimens of four common cuckoo species (Cuculidae) from southern Brazil: Guira guira (Gmelin, 1788) (n = 21), Coccyzus melacoryphus (Vieillot, 1817) (n = 8), Crotophaga ani (Linnaeus, 1758) (n = 11), and Piaya cayana (Linnaeus, 1766) (n = 10). We measured stomach volume and prey were identified and quantified based in their dimensions. The size of the prey was associated with bill width and body mass. Diet items were analyzed and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, based on literature, scientific collection data, and specialists. The diet of the four species was composed by 100% animal species, with invertebrate dominance. Only in G. guira stomachs the presence of vertebrates was observed more than once...

Arthropods associated with the crown of Mauritia flexuosa (Arecaceae) palm trees in three different environments from Brazilian Cerrado Neotropical Entomology
Gurgel-Gonçalves,Rodrigo; Palma,Alexandre R.T.; Motta,Paulo C.; Bar,Maria E.; Cuba,Cesar A.C..
Canopy arthropods, mainly from palm trees, are little known in the Brazilian Cerrado. In order to describe the arthropod community structure associated with the crown of Mauritia flexuosa (Arecaceae), we sampled 150 palm trees in six "veredas" of the Federal District, Brazil, in wild, rural and periurban areas in the rainy season. The arthropods within abandoned bird nests, mammal refuges, leaves and organic matter were manually collected, preserved in ethanol 70% and separated by order, family, morphospecies and feeding guilds. Stem height and diameter of the palm crowns were measured and leaves and bird nests were counted. We collected 3,862 arthropods, from 15 orders, 45 families and 135 morphospecies. The most abundant orders were Coleoptera (28.6%),...

Assessment from space of mangroves evolution in the Mekong Delta, in relation to extensive shrimp farming ArchiMer
Tong, P. H. S; Auda, Y; Populus, Jacques; Aizpuru, M; Al Habshi, A. Al; Blasco, F.
This study is an attempt to produce an assessment of the impact of shrimp aquaculture in the Mekong Delta (Viet Nam) on mangrove ecosystems. For this exercise we selected two sub-areas (Ca Mau and Tra Vinh provinces) encompassing a variety of land uses and ecological conditions. Twenty stations in Tra Vinh and 15 stations in Ca Mau have been surveyed several times from September 2000 to March 2002. Field investigations included mangrove soils studies, measurements of pH and salinity of the water, analysis of mangrove flora, and density and structure of the vegetation. Four Systeme Probatoire de l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) scenes were used for the discrimination of mangrove types and for the delineation of landscape units. For the first time, five...

Laroche, Jean; Benoely,; Siaviri, A.
Traditional fishing using beach seines was studied over a period of one year at the mouth of the Onilahy river. The catches/efforts were recorded on a daily basis, biological sampling and the measurement of hydrological parameters being carried out twice a month. The moderate variations of salinity and temperature (14 < salinity < 35; 25 degrees C < temperature < 30 degrees C) which were observed in the estuary can be explained by the semiarid climate of the area. Four species of penaeid shrimps are to be found on the Onilahy: Metapenaeus monoceros, Panaeus indicus, Penaeus monodon and Penaeus japonicus, which were mainly caught at the subadult/adult stage with a Carapace length between 10 and 50 mm. The presence of these important sizes at the...

Catalogus van de Nederlandse spinnen (Araneae) Naturalis
Helsdingen, P.J. van.
Catalogue of the Dutch spiders (Araneae) This new catalogue is a revised edition of the catalogue of the spiders of the Netherlands of 1980. Newly published faunistic records have been added. A total of 640 species names pass in review, 20 of which (in brackets) concern former records now removed, while 10 are questionable but unverifiable (indicated with ?). Twelve species clearly introduced and not represented by viable populations outside the special anthropogenic environments, such as greenhouses, are included in the catalogue [in square brackets]. Since 1980, 77 species have been added to the Dutch faunal spider checklist. The Netherlands house the type-localities of six nominal species, now representing three recognized species (Liocranum rutilans...

Cleavage, gastrulation, and germ disc formation of the amphipod Orchestia cavimana (Crustacea, Malacostraca, Peracarida) Naturalis
Scholtz, Gerhard; Wolff, Carsten.
Investigations of amphipod embryonic development have a long tradition. However, many aspects of amphipod embryology are still controversial. These concern, among others, the nature of the cleavage, the origin of the germ disc, and the mode of gastrulation. On the other hand, amphipods show the same characteristic type of invariant cell division pattern in the germ band as other malacostracans. Since amphipods seem to undergo a stereotyped pattern of early cleavage they are highly interesting for our understanding of the evolution of arthropod development. In this paper, we describe the cleavage pattern of the amphipod crustacean Orchestia cavimana from the zygote to gastrulation and the formation of the germ disc using direct observation, scanning...

Berg, M.P.; Kroon, A..
The influence of recent inundations on the distribution pattern of the isopod Eluma purpurascens in the province of Zeeland (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscoidea) Small scale mapping of Eluma purpurascens Budde-Lund, 1885 in the province of Zeeland revealed a remarkable distribution pattern. The species proved to be absent in parts which have been inundated during and after the second world war. This study shows that for the interpretation of distribution patterns the history of the study area should be considered.

Berg, M.P.; Kroon, A.; Soesbergen, M.; Tempelman, D..
The millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus, new to the Dutch fauna (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) Some specimens of the millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus (Brade-Birks, 1920) were found in April 1996 in ‘het Bovenste Bos’, a deciduous forest south of Epen, in the province of Limburg. Two weeks later, a visit was paid to the collection of the Plant Protection Service and this resulted in a second record of this species. This specimen was found in June 1977 in an agricultural field near Maastricht, about 15 km west of Epen (province of Limburg). This is the first record of A. pallidus for the Dutch fauna. This species is morphologically very similar to Blaniulus guttulatus. The most important characteristics in which A. pallidus differs from B. guttulatus are described...

The expansion of the range of the spider Argiope bruennichi in the Netherlands (Araneae: Araneidae) Argiope bruennichi (Scopoli, 1772) is one of the biggest and most colourful spiders in Europe and therefore easy to recognise, even by non-specialists. The species has expanded its range in Germany and Belgium for several decades now and reached the south of The Netherlands in 1980. After the discovery of the first female in the south of the province of Limburg more specimens were found in this region in subsequent years. Later the species was discovered near Herkenbosch, about 30 kilometres to the north. Over the last years the expansion continued rapidly and now almost 300 records are brought together. The species has become widespread in the southern and...

Willemse, F.M.H..
The expansion of Conocephalus discolor in the southern part of the province of Limburg (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) The range of Conocephalus discolor (Thunberg, 1815) in northwestern Europe and Britain has expanded substantially during the last decades. The species is known from the Netherlands since 1990 but was not found in the southern part of the province of Limburg until 1997. In 1997, triggered by an accidental find of a population in his neighbourhood, the author became highly interested and started investigating the distribution of C. discolor in these surroundings. The localities both where the species has been observed and those where it not has been found, are mapped. It became clear that the species is common between Kerkrade and Geleen. This...

Early Cretaceous arthropods from plattenkalk facies in Mexico Naturalis
Vega, Francisco J.; Garcia-Barrera, P.; Coutiño, M.; Nyborg, T.; Cifuentes-Ruiz, P.; González-Rodríguez, K.; Martens, A.; Delgado, C.R.; Carbot, G..
Several well-preserved arthropod faunas have been studied in Mexico during the past few years. The purpose of the present note is to outline advances in the study of these arthropods and of their paleoenvironmental implications, from four localities. The age for these localities ranges from the Early to the Late Cretaceous. At most of these localities lithographic limestones crop out, with fish remains representing the most attractive element of study. However, arthropods constitute a very important tool for reconstructing paleoenvironment (marine crustaceans, freshwater and terrestrial insects and arachnids). Detailed studies of these assemblages will aid in our understanding of ancient coastal dynamics and the paleoecology of these unique environments.

Tempelman, D.; Berg, M.P..
Eluma purpurascens, new for the Dutch fauna (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscoidea). The first Dutch specimen of Eluma purpurascens was found on 29 April 1994 on the Kaloot, east of Vlissingen, in the south-western province of Zeeland. One year later the species proved to be locally common along the southern coast of the Oosterschelde and three years later several hundreds mature and immature specimens were found along the southern coast of the Westerschelde and along the coast of the North Sea. So far, the species has not been found on the isle of Schouwen-Duiveland. It seems to be almost absent inland although not all sites where this species might occur have yet been visited. In this paper the morphology of Eluma purpurascens is illustrated, and some notes on...

First record of the nymph of Nanomis rasmusseni Chacon, Pescador & Segnini, 2013 (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) from Colombia Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Salinas J.,Luis G.; Villegas A.,Paola A.; Román-Valencia,César.
Abstract Herein, we present the first record of the nymph of Nanomis rasmusseni Chacón, Pescador & Segnini, 2013, from two biogeographic regions in Colombia. This species was originally described for the Venezuelan Andes. Both Colombian and Venezuelan populations occur at high elevations, in streams with similar altitudes. We also found that both populations can be distinguished from each other by the terga II, VII, and IX coloration, in addition to the branching pattern of the abdominal gills.
